THE STORY / IN DUFFS’ WORDS

THE VILLAGE
SHOWED UP.

We rode around Llangorse Lake on 17–18 June in memory of my mate Gareth “Cheeky” Evans. The 18th marked one year since he passed away.

Scott Hoskins and I completed the full 25 laps — 246 miles. The people riding alongside us, cheering us on and keeping us going made an enormous difference.

Our lap register records 111 participants and 448 laps. Every single lap mattered. And the support went far beyond the lake loop.

01 / STUPIDLY EARLY

50 RUNNERS.
6AM.

Fifty runners joined the ARSE run from the village hall. Even at that hour, the community was out supporting the event.

02 / THE NEXT GENERATION

AROUND
40 KIDS.

On the penultimate lap, around 40 children rode from the Gilfach to the village hall. Seeing them become part of it was something special.

03 / HOME TO LLANGORS

THE WHOLE
VILLAGE.

The whole village turned out to see the finish. I’ve never seen a crowd like it in Llangors. After 25 laps, that welcome is something I’ll never forget.

WHY MIND / WHY COMMUNITY

SOMETIMES,
IT STARTS WITH
A CONVERSATION.

I chose Mind because they helped me through the lowest point of my life in the months following Gareth’s death.

It wasn’t counselling or a huge intervention. They gave a talk that resonated with exactly how I was feeling. It reminded me that what I was feeling wasn’t weakness, and that support doesn’t always have to be something huge.

Sometimes it’s a conversation, or someone checking in. Sometimes those small moments are enough to stop someone feeling completely alone.

When we’re struggling, our world can become smaller. We withdraw from the people who want to help us. Community reminds us that we’re seen, valued and that we belong.

That’s what I’m trying to build: a community where people know they matter, and feel supported and connected long before they reach crisis.

CARRYING THEM WITH US

FOR GARETH.
FOR PETE.

A short time before the event, we also lost Pete Edwards. Another friend who grew up with us in Llangors, and someone I have so many happy memories of.

The cheque handover felt especially significant: it took place on the day Pete was posthumously awarded his PhD by Cardiff Metropolitan University.

The loss of Gareth and Pete has left a huge hole in the hearts of their families, friends and our community.

“The Cheeky Lake Loop began for Gareth. This cheque is for Gareth and Pete. And everything I build from here will carry a little bit of both of them with it.”
